Dawn in the Breede River Valley pushes a cold, clear light across low shale ridges and fields of fynbos. On day one a guide meets the small group at Pinotage House; by day two the single-track loosens up into rocky gullies where marine fossils sit exposed in weathered limestone, and the air smells faintly of grape must from nearby cellars.
