Forge a Fireplace Tool Set: Two-Day Blacksmithing Workshop in Hillsborough, NC

At a working forge on the edge of Hillsborough, North Carolina, heat and rhythm shape steel into objects that carry decades of use. Forge a Fireplace Tool Set is a focused, two-session blacksmithing course that runs 10am–5pm on consecutive days; small groups (max 5) keep instruction one-on-one. Over fourteen hours you'll plan, draw out, bend, punch, drift, twist, and join components as you make a matching poker, tongs, shovel, broom, and a freestanding rack—your finished set will read like an heirloom. The format is deliberately hands-on. Instructors demo a move, you try it at the anvil, and then you repeat until the motion and timing feel natural. All tools, raw steel, and PPE are provided, so you can focus on technique rather than logistics. Expect physical work: standing, swinging a hammer, and precise gripping; the class suits beginners and makers comfortable with a moderate level of exertion. Note that the booking headline lists 'Ages 12+' while the detailed course notes reference 'ages 16 and up'—confirm the minimum age before arrival. Hillsborough sits in North Carolina's Piedmont, a region of rolling hills, red clay soils, and oak-lined roads. The town's history of mills, farms, and small artisans makes a blacksmithing workshop a fitting way to connect with regional craft traditions. After the class, wander downtown to see preserved 18th- and 19th-century buildings or take a short drive to Eno River State Park for a cool-down hike through riverside forest. Practicalities are crisp: the course meets over two full days with instruction that moves from basic forging to shop joinery. Small class size means your project progresses each day until the set is ready to take home. Because heat and sparks are part of the work, instructors enforce PPE rules and shop safety; bring sturdy closed-toe shoes and hair tied back. If you want an heirloom piece with practical function, this workshop delivers more than a souvenir—it's a metalworked object you can use and hand down. Families of makers, weekend travelers, and anyone who likes learning by doing will find value in this kind of concentrated craft time. The experience sits at the intersection of practical skill and creative problem solving, and because it's local and limited to five participants, it's an intimate way to learn a historic trade while visiting Hillsborough. Sessions are scheduled as two full days (for example, November 14 and 15 in a listed offering), so plan to attend both days. Small class size keeps instruction focused; policies and FAQ live on the Blacksmithing Classes page—review cancellation terms before booking. Bring a refillable water bottle and a notepad. This course supports the local craft economy and sends you home with a sturdy, personally forged fireplace tool set today.
