You step out of the coach as the granite face of Huashan looms, its ridges slicing the sky. Pine-scented wind tugs at your jacket; a line of stone steps and iron chains leads upward where clouds and cliffs press close. The day is a choose-your-own-adventure: cable car to West Peak for a quick high-point, or a full traverse that threads North, Central and East peaks on carved staircases.
