Fireside Chat: Tea "That Baneful Weed" — Boston Tea Party Discussion at Historic Cold Spring Village

On a late afternoon in Cape May, New Jersey, the wood‑floored hall of the Cold Spring Grange settles into a low hush as kettle steam rises; Historic Cold Spring Village’s Fireside Chat titled Tea "That Baneful Weed" pairs a tea service with actors portraying Abigail Adams and Sarah Fulton onstage. The event runs from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm at 735 Seashore Rd, Cape May, NJ 08204, USA, and hosts up to sixty guests, creating an intentionally limited audience where conversation, questions, and the actors’ voices carry across the room and invite close attention to anecdote and interpretation. Guests receive finger sandwiches, a selection of cookies and sweets, and beverages including tea, coffee/iced tea, and lemonade while seated in the Grange; the simplicity of the service emphasizes storytelling, encourages leaning in during readings, and makes the table itself part of the interpretive experience rather than a separate concession. Tall windows, maple plank floors, and an original hearth give the Grange a measured atmosphere where actors and audience share physical space; the acoustics favor voice over amplification, so the emotional tenor of anecdotes and the rustle of tea cups feel immediate and human in a way museum galleries rarely achieve. This program stands out in the Cape May region because it ties national history to a coastal rural setting; Cold Spring’s proximity to salt marshes, dune grasses, and the Atlantic shore provides a sensory backdrop that echoes the tea trade era and reminds listeners of how geography shaped commerce history. Practical details are straightforward: arrive a few minutes early to check in, expect communal seating that invites post‑performance conversation, and plan for gravel pathways around the property; for the most reliable information and any questions about tickets or accessibility contact John Ryan at [email protected] before the day of the event. Whether you are a history buff seeking close interpretation, a family looking for an accessible cultural outing, or a solo traveler wanting a quiet afternoon program, the Fireside Chat balances performance and hospitality; limited seating and the fundraising nature of the event mean you should book early to guarantee space. The program also serves as a gateway to the wider Cape May experience: after the chat, explore the Historic Cold Spring Village grounds, stroll short paths toward marsh edges, or Cape May Point for birding and coastal panoramas; these nearby natural venues underscore the region’s seasonal migrations and maritime history. Small enough to feel personal but public enough to spark discussion, this Fireside Chat at Historic Cold Spring Village gives visitors a chance to taste period hospitality, hear two strong period voices interpret contested events, and gain perspective; check availability early and contact event organizer for the most details directly.
