You arrive at dawn on a road that climbs out of cedar-scented valleys and drops into the ochre ribs of the Sahara. The first day eases you through Ifrane’s cool stone streets and the cedar forest where Barbary macaques inspect the edges of the trail, then across the High Atlas as the vehicle pushes toward the orange horizon of Merzouga.
