Feminist Pottery Workshop in Weston: Hands-On Clay Classes Near Canberra

At 5 Souter Place in Weston, Australian Capital Territory, a bright studio hums with hands-on energy: the Feminist Pottery Workshop invites makers of all levels to shape clay into useful and decorative objects. Taught by Meg from Under The Lotus Ceramics/Art and Amy from Deep Blue Ceramics, this three-hour class guides you through basic wheel and handbuilding techniques, introducing feminist-themed quote stamps to personalize pieces. The studio accommodates up to 20 people and supplies aprons, tools, glazes, and kiln firing; your finished work will be glazed and ready for pick-up three to four weeks after class.

This is not a craft-market demo but a compact, deliberate practice session grounded in community and intent. Key features include the sensory core of the experience—soft gray clay, the centrifugal hush of the wheel, wooden ribs and trimming tools, and a shared table of stamped phrases that transform pots into statements. The kiln and glazing bench are part of the visible workflow; watching microglazes fuse in the firing process is a small, quiet revelation. The Feminist Pottery series centers autonomy and everyday ritual, inviting participants to make functional objects—cups, bowls, planters—that carry slogans or private marks as part of their surface.

Bookings are typically made through the provided fareharbor referral link, and classes run to a three-hour schedule that balances demonstration time with hands-on practice. Expect a mix of individual coaching and group demos, with teachers demonstrating trimming, coiling, and basic wheel-centering techniques. The small-studio format encourages conversation, sharing decorative ideas, and a relaxed pace—ideal if you’re traveling solo, with a partner, or as a creative add-on to a weekend in Canberra.

Why book this workshop while visiting Canberra? It’s an accessible creative detour from outdoor activities in the region: a chance to warm cold hands with clay after a morning walk, to carry home a tangible memory that’s locally made. The class’s emphasis on inclusion and low-pressure instruction means no previous experience is required; the teachers scaffold techniques so beginners leave with finished, future-fired pieces. For locals the workshop is a rare space that combines craft instruction with explicit feminist voice; for visitors it’s a way to engage with Canberra’s independent arts community.

Practical notes: wear clothes you don’t mind getting grubby in; aprons and all materials are provided. Pickup timing is communicated via the studio’s social channels. The meeting point is 5 Souter Place, Weston, ACT 2611. Group size and glazing schedule affect turnaround, so plan pickups a few weeks after class. Whether you come to learn to throw, stamp a slogan, or just spend three creative hours with others, the Feminist Pottery Workshop folds hands-on making, friendly instruction, and a clear curatorial point of view into one compact Canberra studio class.
