Dawn on the Hoang Lien range feels brisk and immediate—the bus rolls through low clouds, and rice terraces peel away into jade folds as you approach Sapa. By midafternoon the path narrows into the steep, stone-strewn trail that leads down into Cat Cat Village, where carved bridges, a French-built hydro station and a waterfall punctuate village life.

No—the cable car takes you to about 2,800 m; from there a set of roughly 600 steps leads to the summit platform, which can be done at your own pace.
