A late-morning sun slices across the Sonoran Desert and the trail ahead is a mix of packed dirt, low scrub and towering saguaros that seem to watch your family pass. The guides meet at the Ocotillo Trailhead at Piestewa Peak Park and within minutes the city noise fades; the desert opens into granite ribs and small canyons, punctuated by cactus forests and panoramic ridgeline views.

The area has long been used by Indigenous peoples including the Hohokam; in 2003 the peak was renamed Piestewa Peak to honor Lori Piestewa, an Arizona soldier.
