What exactly is a sanctuary?

As a non-profit farm animal sanctuary, our priority is the physical and emotional well-being of the rescued animals who call Charlie's Acres home. Our animal residents always have a choice as to whether or not they want to interact with visitors and will reside at the sanctuary for the rest of their lives. In contrast, the goal of a petting zoo is profit and entertainment, meaning that animals may be forced to be handled regardless of what they want and are often discarded when they are no longer profitable. By sharing the stories of our rescued residents, they are able to serve as animal ambassadors to provide visitors with an opportunity to see a new side to them and learn more about the challenges animals like them face in our world.

Charlie's Acres is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit. All donations and registration costs are tax deductible.

What should I expect?

We are a working farm animal sanctuary, so please expect to do some walking, potentially get dirty, and be exposed to the natural weather elements (rain, heat, wind). Also expect to meet some amazing farm animals and hear their incredible stories. Tours last between 75 and 90 minutes and involve about 1/2 mile of walking. If you need added assistance to get around the property, please send us an email at info@charliesacres.org.

PLEASE NOTE that companion animals are not permitted on our property and we advise that they be left at home or in the care of others off-site. This also includes not leaving animals in cars in the parking lot, which is a violation of California Penal Code Section 597.7 PC.

Adventure Tips

Wear a costume for full event access

Dressing up enhances participation in themed activities like the scavenger hunt and helps create a festive atmosphere.

Bring layered clothing

Northern California fall weather can shift throughout the day—start warm and shed layers as needed.

Arrive early to meet the animals

Visiting when gates open increases your chance for hands-on time with rescued animals before crowds arrive.

Use sturdy shoes for walking the farm
