Located on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, the Fissure 8 Lava Flow Tour offers an unparalleled chance to witness one of the most powerful volcanic events in recent history. This guided experience takes visitors deep into the heart of the 2018 Kīlauea eruption site, specifically to Ahu‘Ailā‘au, the Hawaiian name for Fissure 8—meaning "Shrine of the Forest Eater." Situated in Lower Puna near Pāhoa, this tour is an immersive journey across the raw, reshaped landscape forged by molten lava fountains that altered the terrain and claimed entire neighborhoods.
Led by a local guide—a resident of Leilani Estates who has personal access to the site—you’ll traverse surreal basalt fields hardened from lava flows that surged relentlessly for months. The guide's intimate knowledge reveals storylines of cultural reverence, geological change, and the community resilience that blooms from devastation. Along the way, you’ll stand near the towering Fissure 8 cone itself and hike to viewpoints that overlook hardened lava rivers and the vast flow zone where over 500 homes once stood.
Beyond the volcanic epicenter, the tour includes the Volcano Explorer package within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, visitors experience the dynamic forces shaping the planet with stops such as the Kīlauea Visitor Center, Halemaʻumaʻu Crater lookout—considered sacred to Pele, the Hawaiian fire goddess—Sulphur Banks steam vents, and the famous Thurston Lava Tube. These landmarks offer breathtaking geology and unique microhabitats born from volcanic activity.
Completing the adventure is the Hilo Discovery segment, spotlighting the charm and rich culture of Hilo Town. Guests stroll through scenic Queen Liliʻuokalani Gardens, gaze upon the splendid 80-foot Rainbow Falls, and explore historic sites including Banyan Tree Lane and the King Kamehameha Statue. This blend of nature, history, and community roots makes the package a rounded Big Island experience.
Comfort and safety are priorities: expect a full day with moderate walks over uneven terrain, closed-toe shoes, hydration, and layered clothing recommended. Note that drones are prohibited in the park, and participants should be prepared for volcanic gases and changing weather. This tour is suitable for beginners but requires moderate fitness.
The Fissure 8 Lava Flow Tour stands out for its exclusive local access, a deeply layered narrative, and the chance to witness volcanoes not as distant wonders—but as active, living forces reshaping Hawai‘i. For adventurers eager to see natural history in motion and understand the spirit of the islands, this is a rare, memorable journey into the depths of one of Earth’s most dynamic places.
