The Walking Tour connects nature, history, and culture as visitors venture from the Museum on a 2-hour, 1.5-mile guided tour of portions of the David Canny Rountree Branch Trail.
Explore the landscape of the Driftless Area and the Upper Mississippi Valley Mining District, learning how the geographical features developed into a way of life from prehistory to the establishment of Wisconsin as the Badger State to the development of contemporary communities. Discuss how fruits of the land were transformed by innovative technologies and the local pioneering spirit. Highlighting features of the past and present, topics will include regional geology and ore deposits, the railroad and early industrial district, local pollinators and plant species, and more. This walk along a scenic, certified trout stream is offered in partnership with the Platteville Community Arboretum and showcases local art installations and a variety of community development and historic preservation projects.
Anyone considering the Walking Tour must be in good physical health, able to negotiate a 1.5-mile tour, and able to walk on uneven terrain. Comfortable clothing and good walking shoes are recommended. The tour will begin and end at The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums.
