Haunted Mine Tours last around 30 minutes.
Platteville’s spookiest Halloween tradition has returned with ghost miners around every corner! Descend deep into the past and experience an underground mine illuminated only by candles and lantern light as you discover historical truths that are stranger than fiction.
Anyone considering the Haunted Mine Tour must be in good physical health, able to negotiate 90 stairs into and out of the mine, able to see in low light conditions, and able to walk on uneven terrain. Good walking shoes and a light jacket or fleece are recommended. Open-toed shoes are strongly discouraged. While descending the stairs, visitors feel the humidity rise and temperature change (can be below 60º F in the summer). In the mine, drips of clear water and occasional puddles of water on the irregular stone floor create a natural atmosphere along paths lined with windrows of boulders. Participants may get wet or muddy.
Though the mine is candle-lit, a personal flashlight can help navigate darker sections safely.
Uneven and damp surfaces inside the mine call for boots or shoes with good grip.
Low ceilings and narrow passages require mindful movement to avoid bumps.
Dress appropriately for cool underground temperatures, typically constant year-round around 50°F (10°C).
Platteville’s mining heritage dates to the 1820s and has shaped the town’s growth for nearly two centuries.
The tour operates with care to protect the mine’s delicate natural formations and preserve its historical integrity.
Provides traction and protection on uneven mine floors.
Keeps you comfortable in the cool, stable underground temperatures.
