The road climbs out of the lowlands and drops you into a green, wind-buffed ridge where the air feels shockingly clean. Stone walls, pine slopes and a river that has carved a tight canyon open before your eyes — this is Stara Planina at eye level. Wild horses graze on the fringes while the Jerma River dares you to follow its narrow, echoing gorge.
