Madeira, an island off the coast of Portugal, is renowned for its extraordinary Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site boasting ancient laurel trees and an ecosystem teeming with life. The Enchanting Santana hike follows the historic Queimadas and Levada do Caldeirão Verde trails, offering a moderate 12-kilometer trek through this vibrant, green wilderness. This journey uncovers panoramic views of the island’s rugged North coast while immersing hikers in the remote heart of Madeira’s natural beauty.
Starting at the Queimadas Forest Park, the trail meanders alongside the Levadas—ingenious irrigation channels dating back to the 16th century that carved paths through steep cliff faces and dense woodlands. The levada path is the spine of the adventure, guiding trekkers past cascading waterfalls, moss-covered volcanic rocks, and the lush canopy of the Laurisilva forest. With its unique biodiversity, including endemic flora like the Madeira lilies and rare bird species, this region offers more than just stunning visuals.
The route culminates at the Caldeirão Verde, a striking waterfall cascading into a green basin framed by sheer cliffs, providing a dramatic highlight to the hike. The roar of the waterfall mingles with bird calls, offering an intimate encounter with Madeira’s wild side. The moderate grade means the hike demands steady footwear and some endurance but rewards adventurers with unforgettable vistas and an immersive nature experience.
Operated with local expertise, this tour includes a convenient pickup from Funchal to the trailhead and opens visitors’ eyes to the delicate conservation efforts that maintain the Laurisilva forest’s pristine condition. The levada trails themselves are a cultural legacy, reflecting centuries of human ingenuity harmonizing with nature’s challenges.
For travelers seeking a blend of rich natural history, epic landscapes, and invigorating exercise, the Enchanting Santana hike stands out as a must-do Madeira experience. Its blend of geology, endemic ecosystems, and panoramic views along the precipitous cliffs of the North coast make it one of the island’s crown jewels. Planning your trip here promises an active day immersed in island heritage and the raw, lush wilderness of Madeira.
