You can’t go shopping on an empty stomach, so we’ll start your Krakow tour with a snack! We’ll head to a shop selling the most popular snack in town, zapiekanka. This open-faced cheese sandwich is a classic treat for locals, and while we’re there, we’ll not only eat one but also meet the people who have been working in this beloved shop since 1980. You’ll get to hear their stories about the end of the communist era and the beginning of the free market in Poland.
Next up, we’ll walk over to a local gallery selling clothing and accessories all made in Krakow, but inspired by exotic travels all over the world. This is a great place to discover there’s no truth to the stereotype that people from post-communist countries have no fashion or design sense!
We’ll then head to a pottery shop where your guide will point out a variety of ceramic items and explain how patterns and colors will differ depending on the region of Poland where they were made.
Strolling further through the bohemian district of Kazimierz, we’ll find ourselves in a special shoe saloon and further on, in a few of the many art galleries located along Jozefa Street. Along here it’s possible to buy everything from wooden sculptures to paintings to handmade decorations and folk embroidery of different kinds.
After all that browsing, time for a coffee break, paired with a slice of homemade cake in a hidden place. This secret spot is both an amber gallery and a lovely café. As we eat and drink, you’ll learn a bit about amber, and then, later on, you’ll get to participate in a mini-workshop to uncover the secrets of this stone. Among other things, you will learn how to discover whether a piece of amber is real or fake.
