Duration

The whole trip usually lasts around 1.5 – 2 hours

What is the Hill Trip?

Hill Trips begin with a short drive along the main road, which you use your own vehicle for, followed by a guided walk up to the reindeer, which can take up to 30 minutes. You should be confident walking on rough terrain and have a good level of fitness.

Once with the reindeer, you will be right in amongst the herd, with plenty of information given by the herder and the opportunity to take photos. There is an opportunity for a short hand-feeding session, but we are otherwise hands-off with the reindeer. The whole trip usually lasts around 1.5 – 2 hours, depending on the reindeer and the weather! Although we cannot predict the exact weather conditions, the ground can be muddy, wet, snowy or icy, so wellies or hiking boots are ESSENTIAL, as is a waterproof jacket, with waterproof overtrousers and very warm clothing required in winter. If you arrive inadequately dressed then we'll be unable to take you on the Trip for safety reasons. This is really important, so please look at the clothing guide on the website and check with us if you're not sure. We will NOT offer a refund if you arrive with the wrong kit.

By booking with us, there is the following agreement in place:

  • You'll arrive at the Centre with at least 15 minutes to spare in order to collect your tickets before driving to the meeting location. Late arrivals will not be able to "catch up" if the Trip has already departed and we cannot offer a refund, so please allow extra time for your journey.
  • There is an uphill drive of several miles from the Reindeer Centre to the meeting place, which you must have your own vehicle for (small parking fee applies). If you plan to walk this distance, please arrive at the Reindeer Centre 1 hour in advance of your Trip to have plenty of time to walk.
  • Your group MUST all be wearing suitable clothing and footwear.
  • Your group are ALL physically capable of up to a 30 minute mountain walk over very uneven/wet/slippery ground.
  • In winter, we may have to cancel a Hill Trip if the weather conditions are too extreme - this can happen right up to the start time of the Trip. We will contact you to either refund or reschedule in this instance.

Adventure Tips

Prepare for uneven terrain

Wear sturdy hiking boots suitable for rocky, wet, and slippery mountain paths to ensure comfort and safety on the 30-minute walk.

Bring weather-appropriate gear

Pack waterproof clothing and warm layers, especially in winter, as weather can change rapidly in the Cairngorms.

Consider midgie repellent in summer

During warmer months, midges can be prevalent; insect repellent helps keep these tiny pests at bay.

Arrive early for check-in

Be at the Reindeer Centre at least 15 minutes before departure to collect tickets and prepare for the drive to the meeting point.
