The word "wahzhazhe" is what the people call themselves and means (roughly) "people of the middle water."
The Osage tribe was known to have lived throughout the Ohio River valley area before being pushed westward. Upon this push, the tribe migrated to what we know as Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas.
The ballet opens with a pre-European scene of village life and continues through the lives of the tribe as they were pushed west. The story continues to portray the hardships the tribe experienced.
