Just outside the lively city of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, the Damajagua Waterfalls offer a unique playground for outdoor enthusiasts seeking an exhilarating mix of hiking, swimming, and cliff jumping. Known locally as the "27 Charcos" or 27 Pools, this sequence of natural waterfalls and cascading pools provides one of the most dynamic water adventures in the Caribbean. The journey through the Damajagua Waterfalls is anything but ordinary—it’s an active exploration of rugged terrain, crystal-clear pools, and natural slides carved through ancient volcanic rock.
Located in Puerto Plata Province on the north coast of the island, the Damajagua Waterfalls span a lush river valley with a series of agile leaps, swims, and climbs. The waterfalls are framed by tropical foliage and rugged basalt formations, forged by volcanic activity millions of years ago, making the landscape both geologically fascinating and visually striking. Visitors usually trek up a steep trail before beginning the descent downstream, navigating through pools ranging from gentle wading spots to adrenaline-pumping drops of up to 10 meters.
This adventure is perfect for anyone wanting to combine the rush of outdoor activity with the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic. The trip’s mix of hiking, cliff jumping, and swimming means it stays engaging from start to finish, with constant opportunities to cool off in turquoise pools nestled among the rocks. Local guides lead groups safely, sharing insights about the geology, flora, and sometimes the river’s cultural significance in folklore.
The site is renowned not only for its physical thrills but also as a highlight of Puerto Plata’s outdoor recreation scene, standing out due to the rapid access from town and its combination of athletic challenge and stunning surroundings. Unlike traditional beach visits common to this region, the Damajagua Waterfalls offer an active, off-the-beaten-path way to experience the island’s natural terrain.
Visitors should be prepared for a moderate level of physical exertion and should bring proper water shoes and quick-dry clothing. The best time to visit is during the dry season when the water clarity is highest and tides are more predictable. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or simply looking for a refreshing way to explore Dominican Republic’s rugged inland, the Damajagua Waterfalls deliver a memorable adventure that packs natural beauty, physical challenge, and cool descents into a one-day excursion.
