You set out from Kathmandu at dawn, the city’s drum of traffic shrinking as the plane noses toward Lukla. From the tiny runway you step into the Khumbu — dry stone villages, prayer flags snapping as the wind guides you upward. Each day the trail climbs in steady stages: Lukla (~2,800–2,860 m) to Monjo (2,835 m), then on to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) and higher lodges that trade in hot meals and mountain views. The wind dares you, the trail answers.

The Khumbu was historically a trade route between Tibet and Nepal; Sherpa culture shaped by Tibetan Buddhism and mountaineering support services developed since the 1950s Everest expeditions.
Foot traffic and lodge expansion stress local water and waste systems; choose operators that carry out waste, use filtered water systems, and support community-based conservation.
