Before sunrise a chopper lifts from the Kathmandu valley and the city shrinks beneath a patchwork of terraces. Within an hour the low hills give way to rhododendron-clad slopes, and soon the aircraft threads between craggy ridgelines toward the white crown of Everest. The peaks don’t wait for you — they break into view, sharp and uncompromising, while the Khumbu Icefall ripples like a frozen river daring you to come closer.
