The day opens on the black slopes of Europe’s tallest active volcano, sunlight skimming old lava and the air tasting faintly of sulfur. You step off a small minivan at Rifugio Sapienza, boots on gravel where recent flows still tell of fire and movement; the trail ahead alternates between soft ash, packed scoria and rocky ridges that push your rhythm into a focused, steady climb.
