Sneek developed as a trading and defensive port; the Waterpoort (1613) once guarded the entrance to the inner city and remains an iconic reminder of its maritime past.
The canals and harbour are active ecosystems — avoid littering, respect private quays, and support local cafés to keep community tourism sustainable.
