About

Students will be given an engineering challenge to complete during their visit to the museum. The students will work in groups of 2-4 to complete the challenge led by a museum staff member. Teachers can choose between the challenge topics below.

Engineering challenges are a great way to get your students hands-on with learning while they are visiting the museum. These challenges are approximately 30 minutes from start to finish. Limit 35 students per time slot. Challenges are not offered on Sundays and Mondays.

Engineering Challenges Topics:

Cargo Plane Challenge - (K-12) Students will design and develop a paper cargo plane capable of carrying a load of paperclips.

Parachute Drop Challenge - (K-12) Students will design and develop a parachute capable of safely delivering an egg to a targeted drop zone.

Mars Lander Challenge - (K-12) Students will design and develop a lightweight Mars lander capable of landing an astronaut safely on the ground.

Engineering challenges are for groups who have booked their field trip to the museum. At this time we do not offer these classes off-site. Groups will need to adhere to our minimum number of chaperones for their age group.

Chaperone Ratios

  • Grade Pre-K -3rd: 1 chaperone per 5 students
  • Grade 4th -12th : 1 chaperone per 10 students

Extra chaperones are not permitted in the class due to space limitations of the classroom. They will need to wait in outside the classroom during the class.

The total number of chaperones may not be greater than the number of youth.

If you have a student who needs one on one assistance and that will push you over the chaperone ratio, please email to discuss options.

Teachers are considered chaperones and must be included in the chaperone ratio count!

Additional Information

  • Pima Air and Space Museum limits the number of 6th-12th grade students to 50 per group per day. If you have more than 50 middle/high school students in your group, you will need to book your visit over multiple days. Pre-K-5th grade are limited to 150 per day. Both groups need to follow the minimum chaperone ratio.
  • Due to an increase in incidents involving theft and damage to museum property, students may not bring backpacks onto museum grounds. All student bags must be left on the bus; the museum will not store bags. Teachers and chaperones are allowed one bag each.
  • Groups need to have their booking completed a minimum of 7 days prior to their visit. If you are trying to book a visit with less than 7 days notice, you will not be able to book via the online booking system and regular admission price will apply to your group.
  • Please note that we do check each school group booking and will contact you if we find any discrepancy with your booking and fees.

Cancellation Policy

We have a strict 48-hour written cancellation policy. Groups who cancel a minimum of 48 hours in advance will be refunded their full admission cost. Groups that cancel less than 48 hours in advance will not be subject to a refund.

All Cancellations must be in writing via email.
