Engage students in hands-on engineering challenges at Tucson's Pima Air & Space Museum. Build, design, and innovate in this exciting STEM field trip experience!
30 minutes • 35 Students per Class • $50 per class
Engage your students in hands-on learning with exciting engineering challenges at the museum! Choose from the Cargo Plane, Parachute Drop, or Mars Lander challenges, where groups of 2-4 will design and build innovative solutions. This unique experience fosters teamwork and creativity, making for a memorable field trip adventure!
Cargo Plane Challenge (K-12) - $50 Parachute Drop Challenge (K-12) - $50 Mars Lander Challenge (K-12) - $50
30 minutes
Students will be given an engineering challenge to complete during their visit to the museum. The students will work in groups of 2-4 to complete the challenge led by a museum staff member. Teachers can choose between the challenge topics below.
Engineering challenges are a great way to get your students hands-on with learning while they are visiting the museum. These challenges are approximately 30 minutes from start to finish. Limit 35 students per time slot. Challenges are not offered on Sundays and Mondays.
Engineering Challenges Topics:
Cargo Plane Challenge - (K-12) Students will design and develop a paper cargo plane capable of carrying a load of paperclips.
Parachute Drop Challenge - (K-12) Students will design and develop a parachute capable of safely delivering an egg to a targeted drop zone.
Mars Lander Challenge - (K-12) Students will design and develop a lightweight Mars lander capable of landing an astronaut safely on the ground.
Engineering challenges are for groups who have booked their field trip to the museum. At this time we do not offer these classes off-site. Groups will need to adhere to our minimum number of chaperones for their age group.
Extra chaperones are not permitted in the class due to space limitations of the classroom. They will need to wait in outside the classroom during the class.
The total number of chaperones may not be greater than the number of youth.
If you have a student who needs one on one assistance and that will push you over the chaperone ratio, please email to discuss options.
Teachers are considered chaperones and must be included in the chaperone ratio count!
We have a strict 48-hour written cancellation policy. Groups who cancel a minimum of 48 hours in advance will be refunded their full admission cost. Groups that cancel less than 48 hours in advance will not be subject to a refund.
All Cancellations must be in writing via email.
Dress in layers for indoor and outdoor activities at the museum to stay comfortable throughout the day.
Arriving early helps groups organize and receive instructions efficiently for a smooth engineering challenge experience.
Stay hydrated during the interactive sessions, especially when moving between exhibits and challenge areas.
Success in challenges depends on collaboration—remind students to listen and contribute ideas for the best results.
The Pima Air & Space Museum houses over 300 historic aircraft and offers insight into aviation advances spanning more than a century.
The museum promotes sustainable practices by encouraging reuse and recycling during educational programs and minimizing environmental impact in exhibit areas.
Keep hydrated through the duration of your interactive engineering challenges.
You’ll be moving between various exhibits and activity stations, so supportive shoes are recommended.
Layering helps during cooler spring mornings and indoor air-conditioned spaces.
