You turn off the coastal road and the world narrows to stone and sky: the van threads a ribbon of asphalt through olive-scrubbed hills, drops into Topolia Gorge and opens onto a shoreline that feels improbably blue. By the time you step out onto the dirt track the air smells of wild thyme; behind you, the road climbs; ahead, a shallow lagoon parts a sand spit that leads to Elafonisi’s pale, sometimes-pink beach.

The road ends about 1 km before the beach; expect roughly a 0.5 km dirt track that takes about 15 minutes downhill and 20 minutes uphill back.
It’s generally family-friendly but the dirt track and uphill return can be difficult for very young children or guests with mobility problems.
