You step off the bus onto low, bright sand that blurs into shallow, turquoise water — the island ahead is little more than a sandbar crowned with scrub and a scattering of walkers. A wind pushes salt across the lagoon; the mountains of western Crete sit like a rough backbone far inland, their terraces folded by time. The sand at your feet shows a faint rose when the light hits it: crushed shells and tiny coralline fragments that give Elafonisi its unusual color.
