Egypt 1 offers a lot packed into a short approach and exit. Those with high skill levels can downclimb the entire canyon if they want which makes it fun and exciting. Our beginners and those who wish to rappel will do 3 smaller rappels.
The narrows in this canyon are super fun! with unique features that keep it exciting and offer fun challenges. With our competent leadership, this is a great family or beginner friendly canyon. The downclimbs yield fairly easily to team work and partner catches / assists. This canyon can hold a bit of water at times after very heavy rains which makes it super fun if you like to get wet!
It begins with a small rappel which allows newcomers to get their first taste and "learn the ropes". From there, the canyon drops down into larger slot canyons with some intermediate rappels as you wind through the beautiful sandstone walls. Hydration is crucial in the dry desert environment, so carry at least 2 liters per person.
Use sturdy hiking boots with good traction to handle rocky and uneven terrain safely.
Avoid visiting during rain as slot canyons are prone to flash floods which can be extremely dangerous.
The canyon is exposed in many areas, so bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun safety.
The Egypt Slot Canyon area was historically traversed by Southern Paiute tribes, who valued its resources and shelter.
Efforts focus on minimizing human impact within Escalante’s fragile sandstone environments through guided-only access and Leave No Trace ethics.
A secure harness is necessary for safe rappelling through the canyon.
