You step out of your car on a warm Utah morning and the white-and-red sandstone face rises like a stripped spine against the sky. The iron rungs are visible, a man-made route glued to natural rock; guides clip you into a continuous belay and invite you to climb. Wind moves through the scrub and the view across East Zion opens—benchlands, distant pinyon ridges and the ragged edge of the canyon that gives the region its hard, sun-baked character.
