Accompanied by our experienced bilingual tour guide, this 4-H cycling excursion incorporates many of the city’s most important and iconic landmarks. These include passing through the district associated with the reign of the Habsburg dynasty, the Royal Palace and Cathedral as well as the Plaza Mayor which we reach by an “off-the-beaten-track” route. We then wind our way through the literary district passing by the imposing town hall and onwards up to the splendid Retiro Park, where we’ll stop for a quick rest and refreshments. We proceed past the restored Atocha Railway station, pausing briefly at the Prado and Thyssen Museums as well as the Reina Sofia Gallery for contemporary art. There follows a gentle downhill ride towards the river Manzanares to reach Madrid’s erstwhile abattoir complex, the “Matadero”, now reconstituted as a cultural and performing arts center. Following dedicated cycling lanes, we cross over the historic Toledo and Segovia bridges to reach the spectacular entrance to Madrid’s vast public parklands known as the ”Casa de Campo” - centuries ago the royal hunting grounds. The return route takes us through the breathtakingly beautiful grounds of the Parque del Oeste (West Park), where we stop to admire Madrid’s oldest monument, the Debod Temple, originating from Egypt’s Asswan Dam project. Here there is also a final magnificent view to the west of the City with the Sierra Guadarrama mountain range way in the distance. The tour ends at Bravo Bike’s premises only two blocks away.
