A salt-sweet wind pushes across the Otago Harbour as the van rounds the headland and the city gives way to cliffs, pasture and the slow shuffle of penguins along the shore. You step out for a walk where grasslands slope toward the sea and the guide points to a cluster of nesting sites; gulls wheel overhead and the surf keeps its low, steady rhythm.

Sightings depend on season, weather and breeding cycles; visits to the rehabilitation centre increase the chance to see birds up close when present, but wild sightings are never guaranteed.
The tour operator advises that some parts of the reserve are not wheelchair accessible; advise at booking so alternative arrangements or waiting at the reserve reception can be made.
Garden entry is included; castle interior tours are optional and can be booked and paid for on the day at Larnach Castle.
