History

The caravan routes and Bedouin camps shaped human use of these sands for centuries, and modern safaris reference those customs in food, dress and hospitality.

Conservation

Off-road driving can damage dune habitats; choose operators that stick to designated routes and support local conservation initiatives to protect flora and fauna.

Adventure tips

Hydrate before you goBring at least 1–2 liters of water per person; the desert and active elements like dune bashing dehydrate you quickly.

Wear closed shoesSturdy closed-toe shoes protect against hot sand, rough scrub and evening chill when walking between dunes and camp areas.

Timing for photosBook the afternoon-to-evening slot so you catch golden-hour light; ask the guide for a short stop on a high dune for sunset shots.

Motion-sickness precautionIf you’re sensitive to motion, take antiemetic medication before dune bashing; rides are intense and may cause nausea.

Recommended gear

Sunscreen (SPF 30+): Protects skin from intense desert sun during the afternoon drive and short daytime excursions.
Closed-toe walking shoes: Keeps sand out and offers traction when climbing dunes or walking to viewpoints.
Lightweight layer or windbreaker: Temperatures drop quickly after sunset; a light layer prevents chill at the camp.
Small daypack with water bottle: Carries water, camera, and personal items while keeping hands free for activities.
