Minimal fitness required for driving; be comfortable entering/exiting a low vehicle and walking short summit viewpoints at high elevation
No special driving permit is needed, but Haleakalā National Park may require timed reservations for sunrise viewing—check the park website before planning an early-morning visit.
The Slingshot handles like an open-air sports vehicle; basic driving skills and comfort with a low, wide cockpit are enough—helmets are provided for passengers and drivers.
Services are available in Kihei, Kula, and Upcountry towns, but above roughly 6,000 ft services are limited, so fuel and restroom stops are best made before climbing higher.
Some visitors notice mild shortness of breath or lightheadedness at the summit due to the 10,000‑ft elevation; stay hydrated, move slowly, and avoid heavy exertion if you’re sensitive to altitude.
Haleakalā’s summit has deep cultural importance to Native Hawaiians and was historically used for seasonal observation and rituals; the area later became a national park to protect its unique ecosystems.
