Drive Key West: Golf Cart Rental Tips, Routes, and Practical Info

Key West feels different when you’re behind the wheel of a slow-moving, wind-in-your-hair golf cart. Golf Cart Rental offers a simple, practical way to make the island feel like yours: pick up at Coconut Row: 7005 Shrimp Rd Key West, FL 33040 and drive from sunrise coffees to late-afternoon sunsets. Rentals run from one day to two weeks, with pickup available daily between 8 am and 7 pm. Vehicles seat up to four people; renters must be at least 18 years old. The procedure is quick—reserve online, arrive at the meeting point, complete the paperwork, and you’re ready to thread Duval Street, head for Green Parrot beers, or coast down to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. On an island where narrow lanes, limited parking, and one-way streets shape how you move, a golf cart is not just transportation: it’s freedom with a small footprint. Use it to hop between historic sites, seafood shacks, and quiet neighborhoods where coral limestone curbs and salt-pruned palm trees mark a different side of Key West. Look for low mangrove tunnels and salt-spray along the shore; coastal vegetation here adapts to brackish soils and wind, and seabirds are constant companions. Stop at Mallory Square for the sunset crowd, tuck into a hidden waterfront spot for conch fritters, or pull off near a sandbar for a quick shoreline walk. Because golf carts are slower and more exposed than cars, driving here feels deliberate. That makes them ideal for photos—the cart moves at a pace that invites stops, detours, and spontaneous exploration. They’re also practical: easier to park, cheaper than taxis, and legal on most island roads. Practicalities to know: pickups occur at Coconut Row: 7005 Shrimp Rd Key West, FL 33040 between 8 am and 7 pm; bookings span 1–14 days; cancellation fees apply (25% up to seven days before pickup, then 50% for remaining days). Rentals typically include the vehicle and basic instruction; bring a driver’s license and a credit card. Safety and etiquette are straightforward—obey speed limits, keep to public roads, avoid beach driving, and secure loose items in wind. Weather in Key West can change quickly; afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, and high winds or storms may affect availability. For visitors who want flexibility without the hassle of full-size car rental, a golf cart turns Key West into a compact, walkable playground. It’s a local-friendly way to see historic architecture, coastal panoramas, and everyday island life at your own pace. Consider mapping a loop that includes Higgs Beach, the Truman Annex historic district, and the quieter streets near the airport to experience different coastal views—bring sunscreen, a light waterproof jacket, and a small cooler for drinks to make the day more comfortable.
