You step onto the sun-warmed deck at Doca de Faro and the lagoon breathes around you — glassy channels punctuated by reed edges and the distant low line of barrier islands. The boat slips from the marina into the quiet arms of the Ria Formosa, where tidal currents shape sandbanks and the horizon opens toward the Atlantic.

Ria Formosa has been shaped by centuries of salt extraction and small-scale fishing; barrier islands were formed by sediment moved by currents after the last ice age. Local communities have long relied on shellfish and salt production.
The Ria Formosa is a protected Natural Park; stay on designated paths, avoid disturbing feeding or resting wildlife, and follow guide instructions to limit disturbance to dolphins and birds.
