A cool mist hangs over the road as the van climbs out of Chiang Mai and into the high forests of Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest peak. Morning light filters through evergreen trunks; waterfalls thunder from granite ledges and the air tastes of wet earth and mountain coffee. The route moves from roadside viewpoints to a short but rewarding hike along the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail, where the trail threads through moss-slick boardwalks, rare montane flora, and open ridgelines that throw back sweeping views of layered peaks.
moderate.
9–10 hours.
Good for moderately fit travelers comfortable with 3–4 km of hiking and several short stair climbs; some altitude and long travel time.
The trail is a 3.2 km loop typically completed in about 2 hours with boardwalks and some steep sections; average fitness is sufficient.
Most private day tours include private transport, bottled water, lunch, an English-speaking guide, and park access—confirm specifics with your operator.
At about 2,565 m, most people do fine; symptoms are uncommon but bring water, move slowly, and let your guide know if you feel unwell.
Clearer summit views occur in the cool, dry season (November–February); August–November can show terraced rice fields but also mist and occasional rain.
Doi Inthanon is named after the last king of Chiang Mai; the summit area contains twin royal chedis built to honor the Thai monarchy and encourage national park conservation.
Doi Inthanon is a protected national park and critical watershed; stay on marked trails, pack out waste, and avoid disturbing wildlife to help preserve its fragile montane ecosystems.
