About

Take a journey with our guides through the beautiful Kumeu Wine Region in West Auckland. Just 30 minutes from the Auckland CBD you will experience the beauty of the countryside and witness the way the contour of the land changes in a matter of minutes.

We visit three Vineyards during your days tour starting off at Soljans Winery. This is a family operated vineyard started by Tony Soljan. There is a long history associated with the Soljans in West Auckland and their original vineyard was in the suburb of Henderson which is coincidently also in West Auckland.

In the Kumeu vineyard we grow Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinotage, all varieties which excel in the Kumeu region. The wine makers and staff endeavour to make the best possible wines for you to enjoy so they get their grapes from where they grow best. Soljans employs modern wine making technology, but they never compromise on quality, so they still retain some traditional methods. In addition to the French Oak Barrique Barrels they have for ageing wine, they still have and use the hand-made, 65-year-old, 2,250 litre, magnificent totara barrels for aging their exquisite Founders Tawny Port.

At Soljans Estate Winery, they produce a wide range of still and sparkling wines, and have been doing so for over 80 years. Specialising in sparkling wines, Soljans are the proud creators of New Zealand’s Most-Awarded Sparkling Wine; the Soljans Estate Fusion Sparkling Muscat. While the majority of Soljans Estate Wines are developed from grapes sourced from the regions where they grow best, the Soljans Estate Pinot Gris is not only produced here but also grown on their very own home vineyard here in Kumeu.

Our next stop will be Kumeu River Winery.

Kumeu River Winery

Founded in 1944 by Mick Brajkovich, wife Katé and son Maté, Kumeu River was one of the early pioneers in Auckland, New Zealand, that helped to establish its reputation as a world-class wine region. Still family owned and run, Kumeu River continues to pioneer new frontiers: winemaker Michael Brajkovich became New Zealand’s first member of the prestigious Institute of Masters of Wine, London, and has been testing and championing screw cap closures for close to 20 years.

Although best known for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir they also produce the Kumeu Crémant:

"The wine is made mostly from Chardonnay, the key grape at this small family owned and operated wine specialist; here it makes up 60% of this wine’s blend, with the balancing 40% being Pinot Noir. The wine is bone dry with lots going on and flavours that remind me of fresh bread, fresh goat’s cheese and a hint of honey and citrus. It was aged on lees from August 2013 til May 2016 and is a bone dry with a full body and lingering finish."

West Brook Winery

Our third winery is West Brook Winery which is our last wine tasting stop where you have the opportunity to enjoy a lovely Antipasto or Cheese platter after your wine tasting and enjoy the beautiful scenery surrounding the vineyard.

Nestled in the beautiful Ararimu Valley, just a short and pretty drive from downtown Auckland, Westbrook is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most respected boutique wineries. The story begins in Croatia, with the renowned winemaking Ivicevich family planted their first grapevines and started to create a name for themselves. Their success and reputation followed them as they moved to New Zealand in 1935, establishing the Sunnyvale vineyard in West Auckland and the Waimauku property in 1999.

With a new wine-loving family at the helm, our skilled wine-making team proudly uphold this extraordinary legacy, using time-honoured traditional and innovative techniques to produce iconic hand-crafted wines. Grapes are sourced from the home vineyard in Waimauku and a single vineyard in Marlborough. All fruit is hand-picked, and the juice carefully blended and crafted into the multiple-award-winning wines including our outstanding Chardonnays and Rieslings. Westbrook wines truly reflect the incredible depth, diversity, and flavours of Aotearoa New Zealand.
