The morning light hits the black sand beach and the sea off Tulamben is glassy, only broken by the slow wake of a local fishing boat. Participants meet at a low-slung dive center where instructors lay out regulators, buoyancy jackets and warm encouragement. After a concise surface briefing, trainees wade into waist-deep water at Coral Garden to practice breathing, regulator clearing and neutral buoyancy in conditions shallow enough to stand.

No — the Discover Scuba Diving program is designed for beginners with a progressive shallow-water skills session under direct instructor supervision.
Instructors keep dives to a maximum of about 12 meters (40 feet), suitable for introductory training and good wreck access.
Participants must typically be at least 10 years old; centers require parental consent for minors and will assess comfort and ability.
This is an introductory experience and does not award an open-water certification; it can often be credited toward a full certification course if you continue training.
The USAT Liberty was torpedoed in 1942 and became an accessible wreck dive; volcanic activity from nearby Mount Agung shaped the coast's black-sand beaches.
Coral reefs here are vulnerable to warming and local damage — follow no-touch rules, use reef-safe products and support local dive operators that practice mooring and reef stewardship.
