You step off the black lava ramp at Makena Landing and the Pacific pulls at your fins like an invitation. The water here is clear and shallow near the shore, bright with waving coral gardens and small fish; an instructor checks your gear, walks you through breathing and buoyancy, then guides you gently out to 30–35 feet where the reef opens.
