The boat slips away from the shore and Gatun Lake opens like a slow-moving theater — water pushing at mangrove roots, a distant freighter inching through a concrete gate. On this guided Panama Canal run you’ll feel the canal’s scale more than read about it: concrete walls, massive locks, and a man-made lake that still behaves like wild water.

Gatun Lake was created when the Chagres River was dammed during Panama Canal construction (completed in 1914), serving as a crucial waterway and reservoir for the canal’s lock system.
The lake and surrounding forest fringe are part of a sensitive ecosystem; stick to guided routes, avoid feeding wildlife, and the operator should follow speed limits to reduce shoreline erosion and disturbance.
