Walk the Old Town of Cambridge with local guides who use a 500‑year‑old map and lived experience to narrate 2,000 years of civic life. This accessible, two‑hour tour focuses on the people, markets, and episodes that shaped the town outside the college gates.
Experience Cambridge is a Cambridge, England–based social enterprise that offers guided walking tours showcasing the town’s history, culture and built heritage.
The organisation runs two signature experiences: The Almost Complete History of the Old Town of Cambridge, a storytelling walk around the historic town using a 500‑year‑old map and humour to explain 2,000 years of local history; and The (abridged) History of Cambridge Town, a concise, one‑hour walk that traces key events and ends at St Benet’s Church.
Tours are led by trained Experience Leaders who are local people with lived experience of exclusion, including homelessness. That social enterprise model reinvests tour income into community programmes and training, while giving visitors a more authentic connection to Cambridge through lived knowledge and local perspectives.
History‑led routes cover topics such as Anglo‑Saxons, Vikings, Normans, fires, markets, Town vs Gown dynamics, churches, charters and civic characters. Walks use historical maps, stories and accessible interpretation to make centuries of change easy to follow for newcomers and return visitors alike.
Bookings suit visitors who want context for Cambridge’s colleges and townscape, travellers interested in social impact tourism, and anyone seeking an alternative walking tour centred on local storytelling. Experience Cambridge emphasises sustainable tourism and respectful engagement with the city’s heritage. Clear meeting locations, public-facing schedules and experienced local guides support visitor confidence and reliable tour experiences.
Tours operate across Cambridge’s historic town and surrounding streets, offering outdoor, small‑group experiences; bookings are available online and through local partner organisations for visitors of varied interests and ages.
