The low hum of the seaplane tightens as you taxi across Derby’s tidal flats—mud flats that breathe with the tide—then lift. Below, King Sound opens like a silver bruise and the Buccaneer Archipelago dots the ocean. Minutes later Talbot Bay appears: a labyrinth of islands and narrow channels where the ocean is impatient, where water rushes through gaps as if dared to be contained. The seaplane slips onto the smooth skin of Talbot Bay and the next act begins: a 900hp powerboat launch toward the Horizontal Falls.
