Agra was a Mughal imperial capital where emperors invested heavily in monumental architecture; the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort reflect 16th–17th century Mughal court culture.
Air pollution and riverbank development have long affected the Taj’s marble; local preservation programs and visitor limits aim to reduce wear and balance tourism with conservation.
