A high, wind-brushed ridge opens and the world narrows to stone and sky. Boots crunch on granite; the trees thin and the air cools. After a long ascent through fir and cedar the trail spills into an alpine basin where a partially frozen turquoise lake sits like a secret the mountains have kept. Wind tugs at hoods. Ice moves with a soft clink. Silence here has weight.

Requires good endurance for sustained uphill, comfortable on uneven, rocky terrain; some previous day-hike experience recommended.
The basin is out of cell range in most places; guides use radios and local knowledge, so bring downloaded maps and an emergency contact plan.
The plunge is a quick, supervised dip for experienced participants only; it carries hypothermia risk—limit exposure to seconds and dry off immediately.
Not recommended for very young children due to long duration, exposure, and rough terrain; older teens with hiking experience may manage with pace adjustments.
No technical alpine skills are required, but participants should be comfortable on exposed ridgelines and uneven rock for several hours.
The Sea-to-Sky region has long been traversed by Indigenous groups and later by miners and mountaineers; glacial action during the last ice age carved the basin the trail now reaches.
High-alpine vegetation is fragile and slow to recover—practice Leave No Trace, pack out all waste, and follow your guide’s route choices to minimize impact.
