You step out of the limousine onto a ribbon of concrete, and the air immediately changes: warmer, humid, threaded with rice-straw smoke and river mist. Towers of limestone rise like unfinished sculptures around a slow river; a bamboo boat slides forward, guided by a seated oarsman who reads the current like a page.

The bamboo boat ride is about 90 minutes, passing through three caves and low limestone overhangs; seating is on simple benches and the boat is rowed by locals.
