You arrive as the road peels away from Guilin’s rice plains and the car hums along a modern highway toward red cliffs that seem to grow out of the mist. Bajiaozhai’s Danxia ridges stand like stacked terraces of rust-colored rock; clouds thread through narrow gullies and wind dares you closer to the cliff edges.
