A cool mist hangs in the gorge as the minibus pulls into a narrow parking clearing and the river’s voice rises from below — the Karangahake Gorge announces itself with cliff faces and the echo of old rail tunnels. Walkers thread through a sequence of timber bridges and battered metal portals on the Rail Tunnel Loop, where shafts of light catch ancient flaking paint and the Waitawheta River dares you to listen.
