You leave Arusha before dawn and drive east, the road shrinking as Kilimanjaro rises out of the clouds. At Marangu Gate the air is cooler, damp with forest scent; a ranger checks your name and the path slips immediately into mossy, root-lined trail.

6–7 hours.
Moderate fitness: comfortable walking at steady uphill pace for several hours and the ability to manage uneven ground.
Expect about 3 hours up and 2 hours back; total on-trail time is typically 5–6 hours and about 12 km round trip depending on route variations.

Most day tours include private transport from Arusha, bottled water, a local guide, park fees and return transport—confirm specifics with the operator before booking.
Serious altitude sickness is unlikely below 3,000 m but mild symptoms (headache, shortness of breath) can occur; pace yourself, stay hydrated, and inform the guide of any issues.
Chagga communities have cultivated Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes for centuries; Marangu was one of the earliest access points used by colonial-era naturalists and early mountaineering expeditions.
Mount Kilimanjaro National Park is managed to protect fragile alpine and forest ecosystems—stay on marked trails, pack out waste, and minimize noise to reduce impact.
