Before sunrise the basket hums as burners puncture the cold air and the valley of Teotihuacan reveals itself in slow motion. From the balloon you watch the Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon climb out of low cloud and long shadows—the Avenue of the Dead stretching like an ancient axis beneath you. The silence in the sky is only interrupted by bursts of propane and the occasional murmur of other balloons trailing color across the plateau.
