You leave Shillong before sunrise, the road cutting through green ridgelines as mist lifts from tea gardens. After a steady drive down into the Jaintia Hills the valley opens and the Umngot River arrives like a polished sheet of glass — so clear small boats seem to float on air. The guide eases the boat closer; pebbles and submerged logs are visible at depth and the river dares you to stare.
