Cruise Details: Towering 14m above the waters of Lake Taupo, the Maori Rock Carvings have become one of the biggest tourist attractions in the North Island of New Zealand.
Taking 4 years to sculpt, the spectacular carving was completed in 1980 and has been visited by hundreds of thousands of people since. The lead carver, Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell, led a team of 4 artists, who, wearing nothing but safety goggles and speedos, carved out the rock alcove at Mine Bay to create the carvings.
2 smaller figures of Celtic design, which depict the south wind and a mermaid, have also been carved at the base of the rock face to represent the cultural diversity of New Zealand.
Check in at Taupō Marina at least 10–15 minutes before departure to ensure a smooth boarding process.
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat will keep you comfortable on the open deck during sunny days.
Lake Taupō’s weather can shift quickly; a light jacket or sweater is recommended, especially outside seating areas.
During summer, swimming is allowed if conditions permit—bring swimwear and a towel if you plan to take a dip.
The Maori Rock Carvings were crafted between 1976 and 1980 by Matahi Whakataka Brightwell and his team, reflecting deep indigenous heritage and acknowledging New Zealand’s cultural diversity with Celtic motifs.
