History

Griffith Park was donated to Los Angeles in the late 1800s and the Greek Theatre opened in 1931; the park has long been a public escape from the city.

Conservation

Trails are in a fire-adapted chaparral ecosystem; stick to designated routes, carry out waste, and avoid running during burn bans or high-fire days.

Adventure tips

Start earlyBegin before 8–9am to avoid heat, crowds, and mid-day traffic when returning to the city.

Hydrate for hillsCarry 1–2 liters in a pack and sip frequently — climbs and exposed ridges spike exertion.

Wear grippy shoesTrail shoes with stable tread reduce slip risk on loose sandstone and rooty sections.

Plan for uneven footingExpect short technical sections and step-ups; trail running experience or quick feet help.

Recommended gear

Trail running shoes: Provide traction and protection on loose rock and rooty sections.
Hydration pack (1–2 L): Keeps fluids accessible on exposed ridges and during sustained climbs.
Light wind or rain shell: Protects against morning chill and unexpected showers on exposed summits.
Sun protection (hat, SPF): Sun and reflected heat on ridgelines make protection essential on daytime runs.
